August 2007 God's Person & Our Problems
Greetings Brad,
Too often our thinking regarding God and our problems is limitted to, "I'm not God, therefore I have problems. God has a rule against my problem. God knows everything, so I can't hide my problems from Him. God does not like it when I sin. God will always forgive me."

The article in this month's newsletter challenges us to think differently about the relationship between God's character and our struggles. Who is God? How do I think about God? Which of His attributes are most relevant in this struggle? How does the way I think about God shape (for better or worse) the struggles I face? Am I resting in God's character? Am I emulating God's character?

If we think simplisticly about God and our struggles, God will seem harsh, impotent, or in some way irrelevent. We hope this month's feature article equips you to learn and pursue God in a meaningful way in the midst of your struggles.

This newsletter includes:

  • ARTICLE: Learning God in the Midst of Our Struggles (A Month Long Devotion)
  • SEMINAR: A Believer's Response to Suffering
  • UPCOMING CALENDAR OF EVENTS (there's alot going on, so keep informed)

Learning God in the Midst of Our Struggles
Brad Hambrick   A Month Long Devotion knowing god
Our battle from and against suffering and sin is first and foremost a battle towards and for God. This is what it means to be created to know and enjoy a redemptive God-that all of our actions, emotions, struggles, and failures should deepen our understanding of, trust in, reliance upon, and imitation of God's character. This study is designed to assist you in identifying the connections between your current life struggles and sins and the attributes of God you need to learn/clarify/trust/enjoy/emulate more.

The premise of the exercise is: if in our struggle to conquer sin and alleviate suffering we fail to learn and treasure God more, we have missed the most important thing God is doing in the midst of these experiences. We would be more rule-following, comfort-seeking Pharisees than heart-focused, God- treasuring disciples of Christ.

This study is designed to last four weeks. Each week you will study one quadrant of God's attributes. As you study an attribute, you will reflect upon two areas of self assessment. (1) How well do I rest in this attribute of God? Do I take the appropriate degree of comfort and joy in understanding this aspect of God's character? (2) How well do I emulate this attribute of God? As an image-bearer and ambassador of Christ, do I represent God accurately to the world around me?

EVENT: Suffering -- A Believer's Response
  suffering
We all suffer. Pain, Sickness, grief, abuse, abandonment--these are painfully common in all our lives.

All suffering is unique. However, unless we understand how God calls us to respond to suffering in general, we will be ill-equipped for responding with faith, hope, peace, and love in the midst of our suffering.
