September 2006
Greetings Brad,
As summer comes to a close and the school year begins again, there is a return to routine and some familiar questions that arise. This edition of the Crossroads newsletter is designed to be of benefit in that process. We hope you find it helpful, and encourage you to forward it to a friend or family member if you think they would benefit from it.

This newsletter includes:

  • "How to Make a Family Code" by Brad Hambrick
  • Sermons on Self-Esteem & Effective Bible Study from II Timothy by Brad Hambrick
  • SEMINAR: Conquering Recurring Sin
  • CONFERENCE: "Age of Opportunity" with Paul David Tripp April 21, 2007

Making a Family Code
Brad Hambrick   Understanding the "How To" & Purpose of Family Rules family
Family discipline requires planning, structure, and clear presentation if it is going to be effective. Without these aspects, discipline either becomes a power struggle in which parent and child strive to out last one another, or a futile mission at “normalcy” that is prematurely aborted.

This document is intended to provide you with a step- by-step process as your family prepares to make a family code (that is a document which details the expectations, responsibilities, privileges, and consequences of the home). Read this article slowly. Take time to complete the brainstorming sections as you read. You will want to come back and revise your initial thoughts later, but it will be helpful for you to understand the next step if you have engaged the previous one.

The first step is to clearly articulate the foundational principles or core values of your home. These are the most important rules. Other rules that are added to the code should flow naturally out of these rules and clarify what the foundational rules mean for particular areas of life, relationships, or age appropriate activities. Start by listing no more than five core values:

Sermons from II Timothy
Brad Hambrick   Sermon on Self-Esteem & Practical Bible Study bible
The first sermon addresses the question, "Must we love ourselves before we can love anyone else?" Many believers accept this statement as an unquestionable modern day Proverb. Paul, as he describes what things will be like in the last days, cautions against embracing this idea. This sermon examines the biblical, theological, and scientific reasons for Paul's warning.

The second sermon seeks to assist believers with the frustration that sometimes arises when Bible study does not result in a changed life. This experience can lead to frustration, disillusionment, doubt, and fear. This sermon seeks to break through unproductive Bible study by examining the four functions Paul says the Bible performs and assisting the listener to approach the text with questions that draw out each function.

SEMINAR: Conquering Recurring Sin
  CRC
Don’t you wish sin would just leave us alone? How many times have you said, “I will never do that again!”? And you meant it. But you did, and you do.

Sin is the universal malady of the human race. Whatever else may beset us, we share this in common: we sin. It disrupts our lives, steals our peace, and erodes our relationships.

How do we overcome sin? “We don’t. Christ does.” Agreed, but we are not passive in the battle. How do we cooperate with Christ in the purification of our actions, thoughts, values, emotions, etc? We dare not approach sin as if it is merely “the bad things we do.” Genesis 4:7 reveals the futility of that.

“Conquering Recurring Sin” is designed to help believers understand the nature of sin and pursuit of holiness better so we can fight more effectively.

Come be equipped for your effort to love God with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength. Know your enemy better so you can treasure your Savior more.
