"No one who is born of God will continue to sin, because God’s seed remains in him; he cannot go on sinning, because he has been born of God." (1 John 3:9) Have you ever read this verse and been confused? It can’t possibly mean what it says--can it? Few people can exist even an hour or two without sinning in some way or another. Perhaps the real meaning of the verse got lost in translation. On the other hand, we worry, What if it is accurate? That doesn’t seem to be my experience. Does this mean I haven’t been “born of God”? John isn’t implying that real Christians are incapable of sinning. That’s evident from the first chapter of this same letter, where he wrote, “If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us” (1Jn 1:8). No—sin is still very much present, and though its dominion over our lives has been destroyed, we could yield to its influence at any time. But in writing that those born of God “cannot go on sinning,” John shows that regeneration has made us incapable of continuing to sin. John’s meaning in this passage, according to Anthony Hoekema, is that the Christian “does not keep on doing and enjoying sin, with complete abandon. He or she is not able to keep on sinning with enjoyment, to keep on living in sin.” John R.W. Stott sums it up more simply: “The believer may fall into sin, but he will not walk in it.”

| Russell Moore & David Powlison | Messages Given at The
Southern Baptist Theological Seminary
Biblical
Counseling -- counseling which is committed to the sufficiency of
Scripture, the necessity of the gospel, and the centrality of the church
-- is quickly becoming the model of choice amongst this country's top
seminaries. The following lectures from Russell Moore (Dean of the School
of Theology at the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary) and David
Powlison (faculty member of Westminster Theological Seminary) present the
core distinctives of Biblical Counseling. These lectures were given during
the week when Southern Seminary announced its philosophical and curriculum
changes to switch to a Biblical Counseling model.
The Baptist Press ran a story highlighting and explaining these changes. The article includes quotes from the messages given by David Powlison and Russell Moore. In a previous edition of the Crossroads newsletter we published an interview with Daniel Akin, Paige Patterson, Russell Moore, and Sam Williams which discussed these changes. In Russell Moore's message, he emphasizes the implications of the authority of Christ for counseling. Dr. Moore explains why Southern Seminary moved away from a model that allowed the state to dictate the curriculum content and placed limitations on the freedom of counselors to utilize Scripture in counseling, reference Christ or the Gospel, and work cooperatively with local churches. In David Powlison's messages, he answers questions regarding the distinctives of Biblical Counseling and painted a picture of what the students have to look forward to in the new curriculum.

Crossroads is a ministry that strives to model and promote the
sufficiency of Scripture for all of life. God has richly blessed His
people by providing the church with His plan for life and godliness.
Crossroads attempts to apply the fullness of God's Word to counseling. In
addition to that, however, we also strive to present the life-giving
truths of God's Word through preaching and teaching.
Crossroads has a large number of seminars available to be taught in your local church, Bible study, para-church ministry, or conference. When we teach these seminars or preach in churches, these messages are recorded so that their benefit can extend beyond their initial presentation. Our desire is to provide tools for pastors and lay people to more effectively present the life transforming truths of the Gospel--both in salvation and sanctification--to hurting individuals and families. Many of these messages are available as free MP3 downloads on our website. If, however, you would like them on audio CD, there is a charge to offset costs of recording and reproduction. Multiple CD seminars are available. To Order Crossroads Audio Material Click Here...
