Had
enough of self-esteem? Roy F. Baumeister, professor of psychology at
Florida State University seems to think we have. In an article “The
Lowdown on High Self-Esteem,” [Los Angeles Times, January 25, 2005, p B11]
he reveals how he was on a research team that studied self-esteem in 1973
with a sense of growing optimism that boosting a healthy view of self
could solve many personal and social problems. Even though some of the
early results were weaker and more ambiguous than he and his colleagues
had hoped for, they nonetheless plowed ahead with their positive
predictions on the benefits of self-esteem, confident that the data would
eventually support their theories.
Now, 32 years later, fresh with data from a recent 5- year review commissioned by the American Psychological Society of all the studies on self- esteem that had accumulated over the last 30 years, Baumeister is ready to give up hope. “After all these years, I’m sorry to say, my recommendation is this: Forget about self-esteem and concentrate more on self-control and self-discipline.”

| Jerry Bridges | A Five Part Series
Given at the Carey Conference
[Romans 10:14-15 (ESV) says, “But how are they to call on him in
whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in him of whom
they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone preaching?
And how are they to preach unless they are sent? As it is written, ‘How
beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good news!’” God has chosen
the spoken word as a primary means of saving and sanctifying His people.
Crossroads has devoted a portion of our ministry and website to the
preached word. As we preach and teach in churches and other venues,
messages are recorded and posted on our website. We also search for
messages and lectures from other pastors and teachers who faithfully
proclaim God’s Word on counseling related themes.]
These five lectures by Jerry Bridges--founder of Navig ators--address the subject of the Fear of the Lord. Besides being the beginning of wisdom (Proverbs 1:7), the Fear of the Lord is a powerful motivating factor in relationships and decision making. Jerry Bridges takes the time to carefully reflect upon what a robust and accurate Fear of the Lord looks like. We hope you enjoy this series and benefit greatly from its content.

| Brad Hambrick | Christ-Centered
Alternatives to Self-Esteem IV
It was
May 21, 1527. This time period marks the “continental divide” of Christian
history. The church was struggling to redefine what it meant to be a
Christian. Major figures in Christian history were in the midst of doing
the things for which we now remember them: Martin Luther, John Calvin, and
Huldrich Zwingli.
In the midst of these major figures was a small group known as the Anabaptists. They sided with neither the Reformers nor the Catholic Church. On this day, one of these men was facing execution for his faith. The indictment read: “Michael Sattler shall be committed to the executioner. The latter shall take him to the square and there first cut out his tongue, and then forge him fast to a wagon and there with glowing tongs twice tear pieces from his body, and then on the way to the cite of execution give times more as above and then burn his body to powder as an arch-heretic.” As this gruesome plan was enacted, one sympathetic observer recorded, “When the ropes on his hands had burned through, he raised the forefingers of both hands, thereby giving the signal he had agreed on before with his fellow believers to indicate that such a dying was bearable and that he remained in the faith.” (The telling of these events are adapted from Malcolm McDow and Alvin Reid, Firefall: How God Shaped History Through Revivals.)

Celebrate the love you have for your spouse this Valentine's Day by
learning to become more skilled in expressing it. Love, it is a simple
four letter word we have understood since our youngest days, but
challenges us for the rest of our lives. How do we demonstrate consistent,
meaningful affection to our spouse who sees us every day, who is a part of
our mundane routines, and notices our character defects? This seminar
provides instruction, not only for the romantic side of love, but for the
foundational, enduring love that must be the cornerstone of any permanent
relationship.
These seminars are a part of a quarterly partnership between Crossroads Counseling and the Augusta Association of Baptist Churches. They are designed to strengthen the Body of Christ in Augusta by providing biblically faithful instruction on counseling- related topics to pastors, elders, deacons, and lay leaders. If you know someone who would be interested, please forward this newsletter to them. To Sign Up...
